Internet Golf Review, Best Golf Websites

The IGR Journal...by Rick Hendershot, theWEG (Weekend Golfer)

Return of
theWEG.com
delayed again
Oh well...

November 30/03
It's too bad I haven't been able to work on theWEG for the last couple of weeks. Seems to me it is an idea worth pursuing, but other things have kept me preoccupied. Believe it or not I'm still recovering from my server disaster of three or four weeks ago.

Because this has forced me to basically reconstruct all my websites (I manage about 20 of them), I have recently gotten my hands on these awesome web analysis tools — most notably the Site Build It! package from Ken Evoy, a fellow Canadian and very successful net marketer.

These tools have led me to restructure all of my web efforts. Especially my main sites (which pay the bills) www.tradeshow-display-experts.com and www.lowestpricebanners.comI've also completely rethought this golf web stuff. My analysis tells me that very few people are ever likely to find this site via the main search engines (Google, Yahoo, etc.) I am a bit embarrassed to admit it, but this never really occurred to me when I set about designing this site.

On the other hand, when I had a look at some golf travel terms — specifically, Golf Scotland, Golf Hawaii, Golf Arizona, etc. — these appear to have quite a bit more potential. So I am going to turn my focus in that direction.

Ironically, stories about exotic golf destinations are what I wanted to do in the first place. So this will give me the rationale I've been looking for. As a result, I've begun a site called www.golf-around-the-world.com, and while it is barely in its infancy, I expect to bring it along fairly quickly once a few more things are out of the way.

As for www.theWEG.com. In time I intend to make it a model for an entertaining online promotional concept unlike anything currently available on the web.

Well, I can dream, can't I?

Scottish Golf
Newsletter is "Best of Breed"
November 29/03
Pardon me for going on about Scotland again, but I have a certain fondness for the place — it being the "home of golf" and all. I subscribe to the newsletter from scottishgolf.com, and I must say, it is probably the best  golf newsletter going. Full of "news and views"  — all from the amusingly slanted view of its editor, Martin Vousden. I'm sure Martin will appreciate me calling it the "best of breed", although (for some mysterious reason) my being Canadian will not likely score me any brownie points. In the current issue he has a few things to say about the recent President's Cup. He claims that Gary Player, being a bit of a whiner, was unwilling to agree to the draw unless the "championship" was split.

The way I saw it, it was the players on his team who made that demand, but I could be wrong. Furthermore I think a split is both reasonable and civilized. Civilized because it demonstrates a bunch of people agreeing on something not worth fighting over. Reasonable, because playing to a draw represents the current state of affairs. Who cares what happened last time? Vousden disagrees: "In the event of a tie, the holders retain the trophy and that’s it." Gee thanks for pointing that out Martin.

Anyway, I suggest you click on over to www.scottishgolf.com and subscribe to the newsletter. It's very well written, and has the best golf jokes on the net.

Here's a WEG item I did on Mr. Vousden a couple weeks ago. It never made it to "air" so is a bit outdated.

Maybe the last time out
November 23/03
I think Fritz and I may have played our last round in Ontario today. Yesterday (Saturday) we were out at Rattlesnake Point. It must have gotten up to around 7 or 8 degrees C. Today was a bit cooler, and it was cloudy, but there was very little wind. There was a surprising number of golfers out — groups were still teeing off when we came around to #10, even with less than two hours till dark.

As we were coming up #18 the sun was going down and it was getting dark. The sunset was awesome, and I just happened to have my camera along. I have a feeling this will be our last round of the season in Ontario, but you never know. This year we've pushed our coldness threshold beyond its former limits...down to 0 (freezing) and even slightly below. That was in early November when our pitch shots were bouncing about 20 feet in the air because the greens were frozen. Talk about firm greens...

Winter is Here

10 things to do before the spring Golfing Season gets here...
OK. So it's too cold to play golf. Even I have to admit it.  Last Sunday (November 9), there was still ice on the ponds. I guess that about does it for golf this year ... (read more)

"Against The Grain"

I did an item about Jack Kuykendall on theWEG.com
just before we had our big server catastrophe a couple of weeks ago. Kuykendall was the original force behind Natural Golf, but had a major disagreement with them. Here's the item, in case you missed it.... (read more)

Golf in Scotland

Thinking about a trip to Scotland next golfing season?
It's not too early to start planning. Especially if you want to get onto the Old Course at St. Andrews. Here is the first in a series of articles about "do-it-yourself" golf in Scotland — for the person(s) who want to do it without a tour company... READ MORE

The Golfsmith gift card, Your ticket to golf gear.   If you're like me, the impending approach of Christmas is just starting to dawn on you. This usually means GIFTS, and often GOLF GIFTS. In our case, the excitement is mounting because we'll be at our place in Florida — looking for a golf hit after the long three or four week layoff.....Anyway, if you're thinking of GIVING SOME GOLF STUFF to a fellow golfer (or recommending something for yourself), you must have a look at GOLFSMITH. They have a massive selection, and I heartily recommend the place. All the name brands, and components (for you golf club builders), golf books... you name it. They have everything for the golfer. And to solve all your "golf gift giving needs" you can get the GOLFSMITH GIFT CARD...click on the ad to the left.

..."the WeekendGolfer" is currently "under development", as we web guys like to say. This will become the ultimate source for information about golf on the web. But for now you can just keep listening to the same schpeal over and over... Give me a week or two.
