Beyond Worthless Link Pages

by Rick Hendershot, Valuable Link Strategies

As I point out in a number of posts and articles on the topic of Disturbing Observations About My Link Pages, most link pages that I have surveyed have no (or very little) Page Rank, and are therefore a waste of time.

This is a pretty sweeping statement and so should not be made lightly. But as somebody once said about arguments, the onus of proof is not on the critic to prove a theory is wrong, it is on the proponent of the theory to prove it is correct -- the onus is on the positive.

In this case "the theory" in question is the one that says "There is something significant to be gained by setting up a link exchange program. The more links you trade, the better."

The proponents of this theory have convinced thousands of webmasters to engage in an exercise called "exchanging links". My research suggests that they have been misled.

What I am NOT saying...

I am not saying you should abandon the attempt to generate links pointing at your site (inbound links). You definitely should do this.

I am not saying you should never exchange links with legitimate link partners. You should find valuable link partners and exchange with them.

I am not saying you should never set up pages specifically for this purpose. You should have valuable pages for this purpose, but not "link pages".

What I AM SAYING

It is a waste of time to set up "empty, content-less spammy link pages".

It is a waste of time to create pages filled with hundreds of links. Google generally recognizes these as SPAM.

It is a waste of time to use programs that create easy-to-recognize link pages. Google seems to consider these as SPAM as well.

There are better, easier, more productive ways to generate inbound links pointing at your site. I outline some of them in my free course "SuperCharge Your Website with Power Linking".
