Must Know Facts For The Newbie Skateboarder

Posted on Thursday, 2nd September 2010 in Sports

No one is a great skateboarder the very first day. Of course there are those who get the basics down fast. Then, of course, some people need more time to catch on to the motions, overall feel, and the balance aspects. All skaters learned helpful tricks/tips from their friends that helped to learn quicker. So here we’ll cover some helpful tips you can use when you’re looking for your first skateboard and start learning to ride.

You’ll need to be wearing the right foot gear. You must be able to use your feet properly so you can have the best control over the board. Sure, yeah – you can wear combat boots if you want. But if you want to do anything remotely cool, or if you commute to work, then you’ll really want the right footwear. A skateboarding athletic shoe is flat inside of it. There is little to no arch support, which is done on purpose. This allows you to use the muscles in your feet to control the board and to give your board more control. Most if not all skate shops have them, as well as most shoe stores. And they’re not over-priced, too.

It’s important to come to terms with fear. Many new skateboarders are too scared to do too much too quickly. They understand very fast that there’s not much in the way between being safe and getting injured. If you want to get better, you have to face this fear and deal with it. If you refuse to deal with this kind of fear, then you’ll always be on the outside watching others do the tricks you want to do, too. You’ll only get over this fear by practicing as much as possible. The more you can practice, the more open you’ll become to taking risks and trying new stuff. Learning the best way to fall will help you, too. The more and more you deal with these aspects of skating, the quicker and better you’ll get.

Ok, decide how you want to be standing on your board. Skaters use a variety of stances for different kinds of skating situations. The easiest thing to do is stand on your board and just be still. So just find what works best for you, find your position that you think you can hold for a while. Now all you need is to determine how you’ll be pushing off to get some speed. So then you try to push-off without needing to go fast/far. Skaters use different push-off techniques. But for now you just want to find a way that’s works best for you.

However, skateboarding basics can seem tough if you aren’t willing to practice. No person ever became a pro fast. Take it slow so you can learn control. You control the board, if not – the board controls you, and that’s a recipe for getting hurt.

Eskimos Outlast Stampeders In Wild CFL Matchup

Posted on Wednesday, 1st September 2010 in Recreation

The Edmonton Eskimos survived a wild back and forth CFL shootout against the Calgary Stampeders before prevailing 38-35 to take over sole possession of first place in the CFL West. Ricky Ray hit Fred Stamps with a 23 yard touchdown pass with just nine seconds to play to earn the victory, erasing the lead that Calgary had earned with their own TD pass less than a half minute earlier.

After the game, winning QB Ricky Ray said that he enjoyed the wild contest:

“That was a ton of fun. In the CFL you get to play in a lot of games like this, especially against a guy like (Calgary quarterback Henry) Burris, who has done this to us. It’s great to come out on the winning end of a shoot-out like that. It’s a great uplift for the team. It’s a huge win for us.”

With a bye week on deck, Eskimos head coach Richie Hall said that the win couldn’t have come at a better time:

“Regardless of what happens, we are coming back in first place. Now we have one up on Calgary. It’s going to be a dogfight for all the teams in the West and any chance you get to win, especially a win like this, it’s a real bonus. It’s great for our confidence.”

Calgarys Burris remembered a very similar situation in a game last year where Edmonton won by the same margin on a last play touchdown:

“They got us last year in this situation and of course you didn’t think it was going to happen again or even could happen again. It felt so great to get that late touchdown and with 38 seconds on the clock nobody was even thinking about last year. We had to stop Jackson and we didn’t. And we had to stop Ray and we didn’t. Kudos to Edmonton.”

Both teams have a bye next week. Calgary returns to action on Aug. 28 in Toronto while the Eskimos will next play on Aug. 29 when they host Hamilton. The two CFL provincial rivals from Alberta will face each other twice more this season.

Portland Trailblazers, Brandon Roy Agree To Contract Extension

Posted on Tuesday, 31st August 2010 in Recreation

After extensive negotiations, the Portland Trailblazers have signed All Star shooting guard Brandon Roy to a five year contract extension. Roy will be in the final year of his rookie contract in the 2009-2010 NBA season, and securing the services of a player that did no less than turn around the franchise was the teams top summer priority.

Brandon Roy may have saved the Portland NBA franchise thanks to his on-court talent and off the court class. The Blazers slumped from their glory years of the 1970’s and 1980’s as the 1990’s progressed, eventually pulling together a roster consisting of character challenged reprobates that earned the moniker JailBlazers for their frequent legal transgressions.

With the Blazers fans staying away from the arena in droves, team owner Paul Allen had finally had enough. In the late 1990’s, he gutted the franchise management and cleaned house. The new management was given the charge to put together a roster that would not only win games, but win back the Rose City fans. The acquisition of Roy will likely be looked at as the turning point for this effort. The Blazers acquired Roy on draft day 2006 for Randy Foye, and would go on to win the NBAs rookie of the year award.

Since that point, Roy has become the face of the franchise. The Blazers”who were 21-61 the year before Roy arrived”posted a 54-28 record last season. Roy has become the centerpiece of a talented young team had has not only become a force in the NBAs Western Conference but has gone a long way to winning back the Portland fan base. The current crop of Blazers is more likely to be found in the aisles at Home Depot or at Starbucks than in the police blotter, and the team seldom puts forth a substandard effort on the court.

The first four years of Roy’s 5 year $84 million deal are guaranteed, while the fifth is at the players option. Roys agent Bob Myers strongly suggested that Roy wanted to remain with the Blazers for his entire career, noting that he “is one of the unique players to have a chance to have that sort of relationship with one team.”

The Blazers now turn their attention to working out a long term deal with power forward LaMarcus Aldridge. Like Roy, Aldridge is in the final year of his rookie contract and a key component to the teams recent success. At last report, talks between the two sides are progressing.

Bengals Blast Colts To Wrap Up NFL Preseason Play

Posted on Saturday, 28th August 2010 in Recreation

Despite the fact that neither their starting QB Carson Palmer nor his Indy counterpart Peyton Manning saw action, the Cincinnati Bengals will take their wins however and whenever they can get them. For that reason, they had to be heartened by their NFL preseason ending 38-7 home rout of the Indianapolis Colts. The Bengals rushing game put 296 yards on the board and Cincinnati trounced Indianapolis in every significant offense statistical category. The Bengals evened their NFL preseason record at 2-2, while the Colts dropped to 1-3.

The Bengals easily covered as a -3 home favorite, evening their NFL preseason record against the spread at 2-2. The Colts ATS mark also matched their SU record, dropping to 1-3 on the exhibition season.

Peyton Mannings backup, Jim Sorgi, put up a solid performance in limited playing time after missing much of the preseason with a hamstring injury. Sorgi threw for 119 yards on 11 for 19 passing and a touchdown and gave an upbeat assessment of his play:

“I thought it was pretty solid. I got a little winded out there but all in all, I thought I saw everything real good and got us into the right plays. The hamstring responded pretty well tonight.”

Colts coach Jim Caldwell concurred:

“He hasn’t had much playing time. I thought he found his way out there. He put a pretty good game together and showed some flashes of what he can do.”

Despite the game being a battle of reserve players, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was still happy with getting the win:

“You can’t control who you play against. It was good to let our guys break a sweat and get out there and go.”

Bengals starting QB Carson Palmer, who has sat out much of the preseason with an ankle sprain, said that hes anxious to get back in the game. Palmer will enter his regular season without much preparation, having thrown only 11 passes in exhibition play:

“It’s a tease. It’s just good to know that I’m that much closer. It’s a week away. I’m excited.”

Indianapolis will start their NFL regular season schedule on Sunday, September 13th as they host the Jacksonville Jaguars at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Bengals will host the Denver Broncos in their 2009 NFL season opener, with a road game on tap for week #2 as they head to Green Bay for a game against the Packers on Sunday, September 20.

Cowboys Beat Bucs In NFL Opener For Both Teams

Posted on Tuesday, 24th August 2010 in Recreation

Tony Romo passed for a NFL career best 353 yards and threw three touchdown passes as the Dallas Cowboys got their 2009 season off to a good start with a 34-21 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Raheem Morris went down in defeat in his debut as Bucs head coach.

The Cowboys easily covered the pointspread as -4 road favorites, and improved to 16-12 over the last three years when laying points. Tampa Bay dropped to 17-17 over the same timeframe as an underdog. The 55 combined points went OVER the posted total of 39. Dallas has gone OVER in 20 of their last 34 lined games.

After the game Roy Williams, who will be counted on to take up the slack from the loss of T.O., couldnt resist a wisecrack at his former teammates expense:

“Career-high passing yards? Without T.O? “No, it’s good. It’s good for him. It’s good for this team. It was a team effort. Everybody contributed.”

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said he wasnt surprised at the the performance of his receiving corps:

“They are playmakers, and we knew that going in. But until you do it, the naysayers are going to say: ‘Hey. You don’t have this or that.’ But I think we do.”

Romo, meanwhile, preferred to focus on the victory instead of his personal output:

“You don’t think about yards. You’re not judged off of yards. You’re judged off of winning and losing at this position.”

Raheem Morris talked about taking the loss in his NFL coaching debut:

“Obviously, we’re disappointed. But there were a lot of good things on offense.”

Perhaps the brightest silver lining in the dark cloud of the loss was the performance of Cadillac Williams. Williams appeared fully recovered from his injuries and rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Bucs cornerback Ronde Barber suggested that the final score masked the fact that the team played well:

“We had our chances. The final score is definitely not indicative of how good we played at times. Those big plays absolutely destroy you football team.

The Cowboys will open their season at their plush new $1 billion plus stadium this Sunday, hosting the New York Giants. The Bucs will head to upstate New York to face T.O and his new team, the Buffalo Bills. Theyll return to Florida the following week to take their turn hosting the New York Giants.

How To Pick Out A Good Survival Gear

Posted on Monday, 23rd August 2010 in Sports

The importance of having a survival gear cannot be understated. During those times of need, it is what keeps you alive and functional before you get any help. Its a good thing that disasters dont strike everyday. But even with that comforting fact, disaster preparedness is highly encouraged. Whether you are in the office at work, at home with your family, or out in the woods with your friends, having a ready survival gear is essential.

As a rule of thumb, go for a survival gear that covers everything. Remember, its better to have it and not use it, than need it and not have it. Survival gears are different for adults and kids, so when you are out shopping for one, make sure it is the right kind. There are also individual survival gears to meet the needs of an individual, and there are others designed to be used by a couple of people.

A survival gear will give you a couple of things. The first, as you would expect is food and water. Since these are to be eaten during emergency situations, they are freeze dried to increase their shelf life. Some go for as long as 25 years, which means if you bought one today, it would be good enough to use some two decades later. Water is provided along with the food, which in most cases comes in forms of high-calorie bars.

If you prefer to live out in the country, or in some isolated area, it would be best to get a survival kit that can last you a good number of days. There are kits that only sustain you for a day, which are not best for your kind of home. The survival kit should also cover the needs of anyone you are with, without decreasing said number of days. Bigger kits last longer, as a general rule.

One thing that can simply not miss from your survival gear is a first aid kit. During emergencies, its very easy to get an injury, however minor. Its important to have every bruise looked at and treated, to avoid infections that might bring complications. Some extras that you might fancy include things such as phones, waterproof matchsticks, and flashlights.

Emergency situations dont come around everyday, but it is good to know that if they ever arise, you are fully prepared. Survival gears dont break the bank, so you can purchase and have them in your home just in case. If you have the ability to assemble your own survival gear, you can do so, but make sure you cover all the necessities.

Chicago Blackhawks’ Great Stan Mikita

Posted on Saturday, 21st August 2010 in Recreation

Professional hockey players from the former Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia are now ubiquitous, but Stan Mikita was something of a pioneer. The Chicago Blackhawks legend was sometimes relegated to secondary status behind more telegenetic stars like teammate Bobby Hull, but you can make a very good case that Mikita was the best NHL forward of the’60’s. He was born in Sokolce, in what is now known as Slovakia. In the conflict torn years prior to WW II, he was sent to Canada and adopted by an aunt and uncle. Like most young Canadian boys, he started playing hockey and quickly exhibited significant talent at the country’s national sport.

As a teenager, Mikita starred for the St. Catherine Teepees of the junior league Ontario Hockey Association. In’59, he made the jump to the NHL for good joining the Chicago Blackhawks. He played sparingly in his first partial season in the NHL, but quickly became an important part of the Chicago offense in his first and second full seasons as a pro. In’61, he led the team in playoff scoring as they won the Stanley Cup”his only championship during his career and the last time the franchise would win the NHLs highest team honor.

During the early and mid’60’s, Mikita centered the Scooter Line with Ken Wharram on the right wing and Ab McDonald or Doug Mohns on the left wing, and earned a reputation as one of the most complete offensive players in the game. Bobby Hull may have been a bigger superstar among mainstream fans, but most hockey experts realized that Mikita was the team’s true offensive catalyst.

Mikitas influence wasnt limited to offensive output”he was a feared defensive player and considered one of the best faceoff men in the game. He also brought about one of the most significant innovations in NHL history, being the first to play with a curved stick blade. This was a very radical modification at the time, but was quickly copied throughout the league to the point where today a player that *doesnt* play with a curved stick is considered something of an anachronism.

Early in his career, Mikita played a tough, rugged style of hockey that made him one of the most penalized players in the game. In the mid’60s, however, he began to play a much cleaner and more sportsmanlike style that would earn him the Lady Byng Trophy for most gentlemanly player twice. The story goes that he had a change of heart when his young daughter asked why he spent so much time sitting in the box on televised games.

In addition to his Stanley Cup victory, Mikitas career accomplishments are among the most impressive in NHL history. He won the Art Ross Trophy as the NHLs leading scorer four times (1964,’65,’67,’68), the Hart Memorial Trophy for Most Valuable Player twice (1967 and’68) and the Lady Byng Trophy in’67 and’68.

Mikita suffered from back injuries in his last years as an active player, finally retiring in’80. He played his entire career for the Chicago Blackhawks, and was voted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in’83. He became something of a trivia answer for a younger generation when a donut shop called ‘Stan Mikita’s Donuts’ was featured in the popular movie ‘Wayne’w World’.

Baseball Tournaments? Where?

Posted on Friday, 20th August 2010 in Recreation

Why are baseball tournament players often mischaracterized as people who are obsessed with competing against one another? In other words, there are a lot of spectators who sometimes assume that baseball players who involved themselves with baseball tournament activity are simply overly competitive. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Not that long ago it was assumed by most people that baseball was a sport to be enjoyed at the local level. However, as time went by, more and more people started to realize that it could become a little bit one-dimensional to play against the same people over and over again. In other words, when it makes sense to actually compete against a wider variety of baseball players?

This is one baseball tournament activity became significantly more popular. Not only did it provide people with an opportunity to compete against other teams, but it also provided a fantastic social venue through which people could get together and interact with one another. This is something that needs to be taken seriously given the fact that so many folks who love baseball love it because it’s a pastime.

Don’t forget that there are a wide variety of people who simply will not attend any kind of baseball event unless they hear about it on a traditional radio station of sorts. Well, either on the radio, newspaper, or if it’s mentioned on TV. You really need to do your best to spread the message in as many formats as possible.

In the final analysis, you really need to think about whether or not baseball is a sport that you truly love and enjoy. If it is, then you should seriously think about looking for opportunities to put together a local baseball event that can draw teams and players from the surrounding area. A baseball tournament of this nature can really be a lot of fun for everybody involved.

Locating a baseball tournament that your baseball team can play is part of the challenge. Click here on this website to find out more information about a new baseball tournament that is coming to Reno.

Carolina Thumps Slumping Tampa Bay

Posted on Thursday, 19th August 2010 in Recreation

Carolina Panthers’ quarterback Jake Delhomme struggled on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and was fortunate that his running backs bailed him out. Delhomme threw for only 65 yards with two interceptions, but D’Angelo Williams (152 yards) and Jonathan Stewart (110 yards) kept the chains moving as the Panthers won their second straight game defeating the Bucs 28-21. Tampa Bay has now lost ten straight dating back to last season and are 0-6 for the first time since’85. Carolina improved to 2-3 with the victory.

NFL sports bettors were faced with a choice between two teams with dismal ATS records in this game, and those who had the guts to take a 1-3 team as a -3 road favorite were rewarded with the cover. It was Carolina’s first NFL pointspread cover of the season and left them with a 1-4 record against the number. Tampa Bay has covered one of their six games this year. The 49 points scored went OVER the total of 40′. Tampa Bay has gone OVER in 4 of 6, while Carolina has exceeded the total in three of their five games.

Delhomme attempted only seven passes in the second half, but the way Williams and Stewart were running there was no reason to put the ball in the air. Williams said that even though Tampa Bay knew what was coming they couldn’t stop the Panthers’ running game:

“I’m sure everybody in the stadium knew what we were going to do. There were times they had nine in the box and we were still getting 7 or 8 yards.”

There’s been little impatience locally with Bucs’ rookie head coach Raheem Morris, but his weekly habit of explaining the obvious to rationalize yet another loss is starting to wear thin:

“We got overpowered at the end, and really throughout the game.”

Carolina safety Dante Wesley was ejected after clobbering Bucs’ return man Clifton Smith after a fair catch call. After the game, Wesley gave this defense for his actions:

“I was just trying to make a play. You can check my record. I’ve never really tried to hurt anybody. I’ve never tried to take a cheap shot on anybody.”

Wesley could face a possible fine or suspension from the NFL but, in all fairness, it did appear to be a momentary mental lapse as he was trying to make a big play and not a deliberate attempt to injure Smith.

Tampa’s schedule has the look of them going from ‘the frying pan into the fire’ as they host the New England Patriots next Sunday-fresh off of their 57 point drubbing of Tennessee. Carolina has an easier draw, hosting the Buffalo Bills next Sunday. The game is currently off the board pending the status of Bills’ QB Trent Edwards who suffered a concussion in Sunday’s win over the New York Jets. The Panthers will then play on the road the following two Sundays, traveling to Arizona and New Orleans.

In the first four seasons, prospect Ultimate Fighting Championship fighters were chosen in two weight classes . The fighters are divided into two teams, irrespective of weight class , every team coached with a current UFC headliner . The teams then compete in a style which varies by season to determine which team can have the authority to pair one of their own fighters against an opponent of the choice within the same weight category to have an MMA match , the loser being removed from competition . At the conclusion of a season, the two leftover fighters of each weight class are put into a single-elimination tournament , where the title of TUF is given to the winner. With the exclusion of the season finales, fights on TUF are sanctioned through the Nevada Athletic Commission as exhibition matches and do not count for or against a fighter’s professional record. This is done to keep the outcomes from becoming public before the air date .

The winners from the first three seasons of TUF competition, and certain runners-up depending on their performance in their competition finals, receive the touted “six-figure” contract to fight in the UFC . These contracts are exclusively three-year contracts with a guaranteed first year. Every year includes three fights, the very first year’s purse per fight includes $12,000 guaranteed with a $12,000 win bonus (a maximum of $24,000 per fight), the second year’s purse per fight is $16,000 having a $16,000 win bonus (a maximum of $32,000 per fight) and the third year’s purse per fight is at $22,000 with a $22,000 win bonus (a maximum of $44,000 per fight).
