Weeds follows the same trend and utilizes a great concept: Suburban single mom runs a massive marijuana selling empire. You get an equal mix of great stoner humor, crime storytelling and family drama, and it’s always funny.

The show is really defined by some great characters. The Candyman is one of the best. She’s actually a female character, codenamed the Candyman. She runs a bakery that specializes in marijuana goodies. She’s also a fitness nut, refusing to sell to anyone who doesn’t promise to exercise and burn off the extra calories provided by her brownies and cupcakes.

The show follows two primary plot threads: One following the mother’s journey in building her criminal empire, and one following her family issues and the local gossip. Watching how the two stories affect one another is always worth a laugh.

Be warned that the show is quite addictive. Each season is really designed as a self contained story, as opposed to each episode, so when you watch one, you’ll want to watch the next one right away. The second movie takes place in and around an airport. It gets a little silly, as John again just happens to be there and the bad guys have a plan that is evil yet probably not as well thought out as it could have been. In the end it is foiled by a single man on a runway with a torch.

The third movie does a good job of being really over the top. There is a lot that is happening in the movie, and John is caught in the middle, although this time because the bad guy calls him out personally. Still, the movie is a good balance of humor and action and wasn’t so over the top on action as to be ridiculous.

The fourth movie, though, takes the premise to an extreme that it didn’t really need to go to. Suddenly John McClain is some sort of super hero that can take on all comers. There is some fun scenes and there are some cool looking shots, but really it boils down to a single person suddenly seeming to be able to do things that only the super powered would really be able to do in real life.

These movies work best when they are done a little smaller. Why not have John go up against a small group of determined individuals on smaller scale? Why not let him fight by hiding in the air ducts and sneaking around with a stolen assault rifle? This is why people fell in love with the series, not just the over the top nature of them.

The biggest difference in the movies is the difference in the way movies are being made. Super hero movies have upped the ante on action, and special effects have gotten a lot better. It isn’t that the filmmakers can’t make a good Die Hard movie, it is simply that they are able to make a movie that is more about the flashy effects than about the basic idea of one man taking on a larger group of baddies.

Die Hard is a great franchise. If it ends now, then it will always be remembered that way. But as filmmaking keeps getting bigger and bigger, it is going to turn into a movie that is about John McClain taking on an entire country while flying through the air on a jet pack. Desmond is deluded. She is much older now and the silent movie industry is long gone. Gillis exploits this to his advantage though and moves in to her mansion and her heart. She is in love with him and when she feels him slipping away then she tries to take her life.

Desmond believes that her career will flourish again, but she is more mature in years now and the film company has no interest in her script.

However, unbeknown to Norma he is working on a private script with young writer Betty and he falls for her. When he tries to leave Norma the dramatic climax of the film sees a shot fired and Gillis floating in a swimming pool with sirens all around.

The famous line arrives at the end with Desmond weaving down the steps and saying; “I’m ready for my close up” sealing her fate and showing how mentally unstable she has become.

This is a tragic movie and reveals the inner darkness and corruption in the film industry. People become dispensable commodities and the film is testament to an actress with a mental illness who cannot accept that her youth and beauty are behind her.

Norma’s character is pitiful and self deluded and it is hard not to feel sympathy for her. The film industry has made her into a star, but now she is forgotten by many and lives a reclusive life in her mansion on Sunset Boulevard.

The servants she has treat her gently and pander to her need to look youthful. In this day and age of botox and plastic surgery the film is an uncomfortable reminder that there are some things that can’t be bought.

Sunset Boulevard is suitable for all ages and is a thought provoking look at the lives of the rich and famous. Desmond’s lavish mansion, swimming pool and servants are things that are associated with making it in life, but her mental instability arising from her lost youth makes all these material possessions meaningless.

Gillis on the other hand is portrayed as a mercenary man who is out for his own greed. He shows some sympathy for Desmond’s frailty, but ultimately he is out to exploit her for her wealth.

Throughout the movie, you are introduced to some of the other characters which do not form the Fellowship but which are no less important. They include Theoden of Rohan, a human king who is fighting to keep his people safe. You meet the Ents, giant tree-like creatures who can walk and talk and who are truly fearsome when angered.

This story allows us to find out more about the main characters and the reasons that they behave the way they do. We learn more about Aragorn and are introduced to characters such as Eowyn, one of the Rohirrim who plays a pivotal role in the third book. We learn more about why Boromir would be so desperate to possess the ring that he would have taken it from Frodo by force.

There are many fantastic scenes in this movie such as the Battle of Helm’s Deep. This battle takes place when the humans of Rohan take shelter in a stronghold which then comes under siege. An overwhelming force attacks them and it is only the arrival of elven warriors which allows the humans to survive. That in itself is miraculous as we learn that no elf has fought with a human since they last battled Sauron a thousand years earlier.

Although The Two Towers is one of the least appreciated of the three books, it is definitely worth reading. It will help explain how things reach the point they do when The Return of The King begins.
