A Downloadable Movie To See: Spike Lee’s He Got Game
Back in the nineties, Spike Lee really began evolving as a storyteller, exploring well beyond his era of being known as “the black Woody Allen”. He created something all his own in the 1990’s, and carved out a fascinating little niche for himself in the cinematic landscape. He Got Game is sort of his answer to Martin Scorsese’s gritty urban films. It comes down to a story of family, and is one of Lee’s all time must download movies.
The story follows a young man named Jesus, yes, Jesus, not Hey-Zeus, but Jesus, as in Jesus Christ. As his father explains “What’s wrong with Jesus? It’s a Biblical name.” “Yeah no &*$# dad!” Jesus is a basketball prodigy being pursued by, well, pretty much everyone. Every college wants him, and they stop at nothing to try and lure him to their respective schools.
Jesus’ father, played by Denzel Washington, has been in prison for years, ever since he was convicted of involuntary slaughter after the accidental death of the mother during an altercation that turned physical, only for a second, but a second was all it took to destroy their family life together. Jesus has never forgiven his father for the mother’s death, and a primary focus of the film is… Whether or not he ever will.
The warden at the prison offers a deal: Let the father out for a little while to convince Jesus to join the warden’s alma mater, and they’ll see about reducing the sentence.
So the father is put out on the streets for a little while to try and convince his son. For the father, it’s not simply an assignment that will help him get a reduced sentence, rather, it’s a chance at redemption, a chance at forgiveness. It’s not really about the reduced sentence, it’s about finding his son’s love again. Not that his son sees it that way.
The father also falls in love with a prostitute and tries to spend as much time as he can with her while they’re letting him walk the streets free. The son must maintain his righteousness, choosing a school for the right reasons no matter what sort of bribes and incentives they dangle in front of him like carrots on sticks. Money, sex, drugs, or his father’s love, are the prizes at stake. It’s a story of forgiveness and temptation for both of the leads.
The way the film ends is surreal and fitting, and shows a fascinating step for Spike Lee. It is also quite touching. The film ends in a way that is not entirely satisfying except on an emotional level, which is, of course, where it really counts.
At times, the film can be frightening and shocking, but in the end it’s all about feeling, it’s about character. It really is one of his most emotionally rich efforts to date. The soundtrack by Public Enemy isn’t bad, either. Spike Lee has since gone on to create more polished, more marketable films, but in the nineties he really created a unique niche for himself in the cinematic landscape.
